*Special needs dog - blind senior girl*

At approximately 8-10 years old, Kira found herself in a kennel, completely blind and hard of hearing, a huge lump on her ear, with matted and dirty fur. But despite the initial physical appearance, you couldn't meet a kinder dog, and she is so deserving of her chance at a new life.

Since coming into care, with the help of great vets, the council and her current foster carers, Kira has undergone quite the transformation - just check out those before and after photos!.

She has had both of her eyes removed, as they were non-functional and causing severe irritation, has had the lump on her ear removed, has been desexed, has been groomed, and has been loved by everyone who has met her.

On her overall health check, Kira is in incredible shape and does not show her age. Her teeth are perfect, and her pre-anaesthetic blood tests were also great. Given she is a Cocker Spaniel, she does require ear cleaning given her lovely floppy ears, but she is so easy to do this too and doesn't complain at all.

Kira is all up to date on vaccinations, worming etc.

Given her reduction in senses, Kira understandably has separation anxiety. For example, even when in familiar environments, she will cry if she realises you aren't near her, even if she is in the living room and you just in the kitchen. Given she can't see if you've left, and her hearing is so reduced, her only method of checking if you're there is to search. As a result, Kira needs a family who is understanding of this, and one who is willing to continue to find her an area where she feels safe and comfortable without continuous need for touch. Whilst in care, Kira has demonstrated she is able to do this, but it does take a lot of time, patience and of course, understanding. One of our best tricks has been to move a familiar blanket/quilt from room to room when we are in them, that way she can settle herself down on that blanket and is in close range to check-in with you if she needs to. We have also trialed crate-training with her, and whilst she does eventually settle down, it can take a while before she stops howling and crying, so again will take a lot of patience and perseverance. Whilst in kennels at the vets, the same is the case, but she seems more willing to settle in this environment.

Despite the reduction in senses, Kira does not have an aggressive bone in her body. When asleep or disorientated, you can approach her without any concern that she will snap, she just immediately starts wagging her tail and is so happy. Kira does have some slight hearing left, so we have found saying her name in a higher pitch and whistling she can definitely hear, and this also helps to reassure her that you are around.

As a result, Kira will be suited to a home where the person works from home. She gets along with other dogs very well, and has also been introduced to cats and not had a problem, so if the family has other dogs this may eventually be very helpful for her to find reliable company from other animals. She needs a home willing to work with her consistently, and provide a very safe space for her when she is left alone, or if she is to be alone for longer is able to cater for her and have someone even look after her. There will be clear requirements for the family to meet to adopt this girl, so please be aware of this prior to considering her for adoption.

Teddy is a lovely older dog who has recently been return to DCH after being adopted after his owner became ill and could no longer look after him.

Teddy loves people and loves going up to them and getting pats. He also likes other dogs and currently lives in a household with 4 other dogs. At the dog park he goes up to other dogs to say hello. He is a very gentle easy going dog. He spent the first part of his life as an only dog living on his own outdoors and only getting the occasional walk. Now he is looking for a forever home where he will get the love that he truly deserves.

15/7/2020 - Update - Vader has received just under 100 applications for adoption. We are currently reviewing all the applications received to date and will be in contact with a few specific people to narrow down the search for his forever home. His profile has been placed on hold while we review applications.

Vader is a Pugalier who is ¾ Pug and ¼ Cavalier. He is a beautiful natured dog who is a very loyal companion. He loves attention and company and enjoys a good walk. Vader has been an indoors dog with access to the outdoors. He has grown up with a Labrador and recently while in foster has had a Beaglier for company. Vader is still young and loves to play and can be a very active in his play.

He gets along well with kids and other dogs. He is very curious and always entertaining.

He needs a home where he will get lots of love, attention and exercise. He needs an active home to give him the attention that he needs. He needs daily exercise and lots of social interaction.

During Covid, he has been isolated in a home and has not received the exercise or training that he needs. Vader is not fully toilet trained but he has been routine trained and will go outside first thing in the morning to do his business. He still has a few accidents but it’s a vast improvement on when he first arrived. Vader has a puppy pad inside at night just in case he cannot hold it.

Vader does have separation anxiety issues and struggles when left alone. The first week when he arrived into care was quite difficult and there were a few sleepless nights as he adjusted to a new home and new environment. He constantly wants to be with you for company and does not like being left in a room on his own. He is suitable for a home where someone is home more often then not and won’t be adopted out to a home where the owners are at work full time and he would be left alone.

Vader is very food driven and will eat anything put in front of him. He needs a slow me down bowl to slow his eating. He is best on a grain free diet as he was originally gassy etc until we moved him to a grain free diet.

Vader has learnt some basic commands like Sit, Toilet (which is a work in progress) and is starting to get Shake. He still needs further on-going training and socialisation. His personality is a little stubborn but with repetition he can be trained.

Vader has had his 3 vaccinations and has been recently desexed. He has received regular worming treatments and has been treated for fleas. He is in good health however there are some common breed aliments that you need to be aware of prior to adopting Vader. Please read the breed information at the bottom of the profile and make sure you have researched the breed to ensure you understand Vader’s breed.

Expressions of interest in adopting Vader are welcome. When expressing interest, please provide as much information about yourself, your home, your dog experience, your work routine/hours and any other pets that you have. We will select our top few expressions of interest and enter into conversations about Vader and will arrange for a meet and greet with a select few people to eventually find him a home that is suitable for his needs. His listing maybe placed on hold once we have received sufficient expressions of interest to allow our part-time volunteer to assess the applications. Meet and Greets will only be possible to the selected few and will take place outside of business hours or on the weekends.

Trixie is an adorable 2.5 year old Kelpie cross.

She has been in foster care for 2 months, after her owner passed away.

Moving from a farm in the country has been quite a change for Trixie as she is now surrounded by a lot of new unfamiliar noises and has taken time to adjust to city life.

Trixie is quiet dog, who will happily lie all day in the sun, getting pats on the head.

She is starting to come out of her shell, and walks fine on a lead around the backyard, but not so much out the front as cars can cause a fright.

She has been desexed, microchipped, and vaccinated. She is due for her next vaccination in June 2021.

During the course of vet treatments we had X-rays's completed and found that Trixie had a broken leg in the past which was untreated and healed on its own. The vets have decided no surgery is needed at this time but this may impact her down the track.

Roxy was rescued under Duty of Care whilst the Pound tried to find her owners. As no one came forward, Roxy was transferred to DCH care. Roxy initially presented with a flea/skin infection which has come along way, and has exposed nerve roots in some teeth, 5 which will have to be removed. Roxy is a quiet girl and is okay with and without company, prefers to sleep on the end of a bed or curled up on a comfy circular bed.
Roxy is not a playful girl but does set a good pace when walking on a lead, preferring a collar to a harness. Roxy is non-reactive to other dogs and walks well.
Very occasionally, as with most small dogs, her trachea 'sticks', causing a strange choking sound, however it fixes itself after a few seconds.
Roxy has had a successful meet and greet and is likely to get adopted after her stitches are removed after surgery. If, however, the trial period is unsuccessful, the 'On Hold' stamp will be removed and Roxy will be looking for another furever home.

Hutch is a lovely young Staffy, between 5-10 months old, who has recently been rescued from a pound after suffering quite a bit in his young life. He is now loving life in his new foster home, surrounded by other dogs who he gets along with very well. He is a very friendly boy, and will be able to go to a home with other dogs after a meet and greet.
Hutch is currently undergoing some medical treatment, and will be vaccinated and microchipped soon, after which he can be collected and adopted into his new family. Please contact Rod for more information, and to meet this lovely young boy.

Starksy has just been collected from the pound with his little brother Hutch. Starksy is between 5-10 months old, and is a lovely young boy who gets along with all the other dogs in his foster family, and loves people too.
He would be suited to a home with other animals, or where he gets plenty of interaction with his new family.
Starsky is currently receiving some medical treatment, and will be vaccinated and microchipped soon, after which he can be adopted and be ready to live out his life with his new family. Please contact Rod for some more information.

Lovely Dory! Dory came into care recently with her sister, Shadow.
They are your text-book puppy, with plenty of energy and love to go round, and the best cuddles! They are very playful, but clearly love to snuggle up once they are all worn out!
Dory will need to stay in care until she is desexed, vaccinated and microchipped, but in the meantime call her carer to have a chat and meet lovely Dory!

Roxy came as a stray from Campbelltown pound. She is a 30kgs very energetic dog who is full of love. You could say she has a double personality. She can be this lovely nice dog, quiet and obedient... but that only lasts for a moment. Roxy gets excited about... well pretty much everything and other dogs in particular. In other words, her excitement gets the best of her!
She is smart and responds well to training.
She's only been to the dog park a few times and is still shy and unsure so more socializing with other dogs would be very beneficial.

She is meant to be 1 to 1.5 years old but still acts like a puppy most of the time. She will nip at your hands to play, bite her own tail as a way to throw a tantrum and is very vocal. Training can make her frustrated and, as a stubborn pup, she will show you how much she disagrees! She is pretty needy and requires attention.

She is very playful with high levels of energy and never ending stamina so she needs a large yard and a very active family. She is always down for playtime!
She wouldn't be suited for a family with young kids as she is pretty clumsy. Teens as a minimum age.

She loves to play fetch and be chased around the garden. She is toilet trained and sleeps indoors all through the night. She is currently living with cats but they are separated. She is curious about them but hasn't shown any aggression.

Her ideal family would not be full time workers and be very active people. They should also be seasoned dog owners (or people who know the breed) and have extensive experience in dog training and confident with dominant dogs.
With the right professional dog training/puppy school and plenty of patience, she will settle down.
With the right owners and training, she will grow into a beautiful and loyal dog always ready for the next adventure.

Hi my name is Tilly! I'm about 3 years old and am mum to some of the puppies on the website at the moment - like Dory and Shadow! In total I had 9 puppies, and now they are all big enough I've been desexed and am ready for my retirement home!!!
I absolutely love people, I'm very cuddly and really lap up all your attention. I'm also very obedient, and whilst I need further training, I should learn really quickly with the right teaching!
I won't be suited to a home where there are other cats, as I'm afraid I'm not very friendly with them. I can go to a home with other dogs, but probably not any that are smaller than I am.
